Over the last month, a large clearance sale took place in Baltinglass, while another took place at Massey Ferguson dealership, Whelans Garage Ltd, on 12 November. Flynn’s will host an auction this week. There is a movement towards using auctions to sell machines.

It was described as standing room only for the clearance sale of farm machinery in Baltinglass, Co Wicklow, on 22 October. Described by the auctioneer Michael Doyle as a “rare auction of pristine machinery”, it was held on the premises of a well-known farmer and contractor and attracted approximately 2,000 people from right across the country and even as far away as Scotland and Wales.

Despite the fact that there was no reserve, the machinery, tools and tractors went for high prices. A 2007 JCB 412S loader made €58,000, a 2010 T6080 tractor hit €54,000, while a 2000 TS115 made €30,000.

Other machines such as the Kverneland NG-3 301 3M power harrow made €8,000, while a McHale bale wrapper sold for €8,000 and the 2009 Strautmann Giga-Vitesse silage wagon made €44,000. There were several keen bidders for the 2011 Bredal spreader and it reached the €30,000 mark.

“The prices reflected the fact that the machinery was genuine, carefully looked after by one owner and had low hours and mileage,” the auctioneer said after the sale, adding that the unexpected turnout saw a total of 622 people register to bid.

Whelans Garage Ltd held a machinery auction at its main garage, the first time in the company’s 50-year history that it held an auction to clear secondhand stock. Hennessy Auctioneers carried out the auction and reported that more than 1,000 people attended the one-day sale, with 80% coming from Clare, Cork, Galway, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary. The remaining 20% came from the midlands.

Hennessy Auctioneers also reported a strong bidding trade, with more than 300 people registering to bid and 87% of the 291 lots being sold. In total, 70% of the machinery was unreserved, but still commanded a good price due to competitive bidding, according to the auctioneer.

  • A 1983 Ford 6610 2WD sold for €6,600 exceeding the reserve of €6,000.
  • A 1989 MF 390 4WD sold for €6,100, exceeding the reserve of €6,000.
  • A 1988 Zetor 10145 4WD sold for €4,200, exceeding the reserve of €4,000.
  • A 1994 MF 3070 2WD sold for €4,400, exceeding the reserve of €4,000.
  • However, it was not all good news, with two of the big-ticket items – a 2007 New Holland 6010 4WD tractor and a 2012 John Deere 6430 tractor and loader – failing to sell, suggesting that it may be difficult to shift higher-value items at a garage auction unless warranties and backup service are also being given.

Speaking at the event, auctioneer John Hennessy said: “In general, we believe an auction is a good way for garages to sell items with a value under €15,000. Once you go over this value, customers are seeking warranties with the machines, unlike on-farm retirement auctions where high-value items sell without warranties.”
