Two parcels in Laois sold under the hammer

Earlier this month, auctioneer Harry Sothern of REA Sothern, Carlow, sold two parcels of land situated at Castleroe West, Kilkee, Co Kildare. The first parcel, which comprised circa 8.9 acres of “good quality ground”, was sold under the hammer for €129,000 or €14,494/acre.

According to Harry Sothern, there was a lot of interest in the land with four bidders battling it out. Bidding opened at €60,000 and climbed quickly before it was put on the market at €100,000. The second piece of land was situated nearby at Crooket, Maganey, Co Kildare and comprised circa 16.4 acres. It is described as boggy land that is in need of reclamation. Two bidders fought it out for this parcel. After being put on the market at €100,000, it was eventually sold for €112,000, just shy of the guide price.

Selling agent Harry Sothern said he and the vendors were very satisfied with the outcome.

20 acres sold in Wexford for €13,255/acre

Last Friday, auctioneer David Quinn of Quinn Properties, Gorey, sold a circa 20.37-acre roadside holding for €270,000 (€13,255/ac) at public auction. The land was situated at Coolnaboy, Oylgate, Co Wexford. In all, there were 22 bids between four parties over the course of the auction.

Bidding opened at €150,000 and when it reached €220,000, the property was put on the market by auctioneer David Quinn. It then came down between two “really strong bidders” before being sold under the hammer to a local farmer for his winning bid of €270,000.

The property has over 500m of road frontage onto two roads, which gives it potential for a residential holding, according to Quinn. The land is laid out in six divisions, all currently in grass and is described as “good quality ground”.

Land in Carlow makes €11,500/acre

Auctioneer Charlie McDermott of Sherry Fitzgerald McDermott, Carlow, sold circa 32.56 acres of land last Friday for €385,000 (€11,824/ac). The land had been guided at €330,000 or just over €10,000/ac but after a strong auction was sold for substantially more to an adjoining farmer.

The land is well fenced and currently all in grass with road frontage onto the Castledermot/Baltinglass road, a couple of miles from Castledermot.
