Aurivo, the largest multipurpose co-operative in the west of Ireland, and agricultural training body Teagasc have co-published a dairy handbook which covers some of the most important farm management issues for farmers in the west and north west of the country.

The publication is the first of its kind and is a product of the Aurivo/Teagasc joint programme which runs events, workshops and open days as part of the Aurivo Farm Profitability Programme.

Farming conditions in the west and north-west region are very different from those in other parts of they country, the two bodies say. Farmers face challenges such as heavy rainfall, preparation for expansion and improving farm efficiencies. The handbook is therefore designed to give helpful tips on dairy farm management and was produced in direct consultation with a number of farmers from the region.

Useful advice

The book gives useful advice on installing farm roadways to doing your first profit monitor, and features advice from farmers in the west and north west who experience heavy rainfall.

It also includes sections on preparation for expansions and trying to improve farm efficiencies in general. Aurivo and Teagasc say the technologies and on farm experiences discussed in the handbook are equally relevant to both spring and liquid producers.

Speaking about the new dairy handbook, Roberta McDonald, Farm Profitability Programme Manager from Aurivo said: "Our Farm Profitability Programme is now in its third year of operation and it is one of the most valuable tools the co-op can offer farmers to assist in their journey of improvement. Farmers from across the west and north west were instrumental in the creation of the dairy handbook. They opened their farms for focus farm events, shared experiences of their farm management challenges and applied recommended farm management practices from Aurvio and Teagasc in the way they managed their farms.

"I encourage all dairy farmers to read and implement the advice in this handbook on their own farms and partake in the Farm Profitability Programme."

Teagasc Dairy specialist, Pat Clarke, added: "We are delighted to be involved in a joint programme with Aurivo and in the Farm Profitability Programme. The dairy handbook gives farmers the opportunity to share their experiences of best practices and tell their own story. We hope that the handbook will prove to be an invaluable resource to farmers and help dairy farms work as efficiently as possible throughout the west and north west region."
