As Nathan Tuffy’s analysis of MartWatch data shows, mart trading for the first part of the year was able to withstand the full effects of the falling beef price somewhat, partly due to strong activity from farmers purchasing for summer grazing systems. However, it is more evident in the last few weeks that falling beef prices and changes to processor specifications are starting to have a greater effect on the trade.
Uncertainties over margins attainable from winter finishing systems, as detailed on this week’s beef feature on pages on 36 and 37, along with delays finding a resolution to the protracted labelling issues limiting the trade of cattle to northern feeders, are also adding to mart mangers’ worries as to how the trade will unfold in the coming weeks. An agreement on specifications and market signals from factories is key to adding confidence to autumn sales.
