The pedigree cattle took centre stage on the first day of he 150th Balmoral show. To mark the historic anniversary an all-female panel was chosen to judge the pedigree classes over the three days.

A look at who they chose as champion in a number of categories is detailed below:

Angus

Numbers in the Angus section were slashed, with just 30 animals being presented for show. However, judging went on with two-year-old Taugh Blane Blackbird Special awarded the championship. This stylish heifer was exhibited by Iain Colville, Newtownards, Co Down. Sired by Rawburn Boss Hogg, Blackbird's mother was born as a result of an ET and was a former champion at Balmoral herself.

The McCordie family were out in front in the Hereford ring with Solpoll 1 Perfection ET. This win marked the yearling's first time showing, and what a way to start. Sired by the herd’s stock bull Panmure 1 Henry, she is out of a daughter of the three time Balmoral champion Solpoll 1 Dynamite. This topped an exceptional day for the family who also secured another first placing, a second and two thirds, all with Panmure 1 Henry progeny.

Charolais

Irish breeder Brendan Feeney of the Bostonia herd in Co Sligo claimed the top spot in the Charolais ring. His heifer Drumshane Mademoiselle ticked all the boxes for judge Tracey Nicoll. Expertly brought out by Daragh McManus, Mademoiselle was sired by Inverlochy Gurka. No stranger to winning ways, this rising two-year-old was junior champion at the Highland show and reserve junior champion at the Yorkshire show before being bought by Feeney.

The Limousin breed witnessed one of the largest and most impressive entries of any breed. Continuing their run of success from last year’s clean sweep was the Savage family of Trueman Limousins. Top of their outfit, having secured a number of other top placings, was Trueman Noreen. This 13-month-old heifer is sired by the world record priced Trueman Jagger, while the dam is home-bred Trueman Euphonium, the 2011 National Champion. Two other full sisters to this heifer also secured red rosettes in their respective classes.

Top of the line was his four-year-old homebred bull Drumlegagh Hamish. This bull is again no stranger to success, having claimed the overall championship at Balmoral last year as well as the male championship at the Royal Highland. Sire of the champion is Drumlegagh Ferdinand.
