While many farms are a while away from turning out stock, it is a good idea to check fences and drinkers in fields and paddocks to make sure that everything is set up for grazing when the time comes. The next two months will be busy with calving and lambing on drystock farms and now is a good time to take a walk to check boundaries.

On drier farms in the southern half of the country, thoughts should turn to planning fertiliser applications. A good recommendation for first fertiliser application is 23 units/ac of urea. Spread this on areas which have been recently reseeded or areas high in P and K. These fields will give the best response to nitrogen. Wait until ground conditions are right and soil temperatures are above 6°C, but plan now to be ready when this time arrives.
