Despite heavy rain across western counties, and continued unsettled weather ahead for the coming week, buyers were still very active at Saturday's sale. The strongest demand was the bullock ring, which saw mainly store cattle on offer.
The best trade on Saturday again was seen for short-keep and heavy cattle.
Bullocks
Bullocks over 600kg were met with plenty of buyer activity and, as a result, the trade started and continued strong.
All good-quality U grade bullocks over 600kg sold mainly from €700 to €800 along with the weight, with very heavy types making over €1,000 with the weight. Average-quality bullocks in that weight range sold mainly from €600 to €750 over.
Lighter store bullocks were in demand also, with plenty of farmers active. Although prices may not have been quite as hot at times as those for forward and short-keep types. The average 450kg steer sold mainly from €500 to €600 along with the weight, with better-quality types making over €750 with the weight.
There were some weanlings on offer also, which sold from €850 to €1,000 for those from 350kg to 400kg. Lighter types sold from €700 to €850.
Heifers and weanlings
The heifer trade may not have been quite as strong as the bullock trade at times, but there were plenty of buyers present. Heifers from 500kg to 600kg sold mainly from €1,100 to €1,250, with top-quality heavy types making up to €1,300.
Store heifers from 400kg to 500kg were in plentiful supply and sold mainly from €950 to €1,150.

This Limousin cross heifer, born April 2015 and weighing 515kg, sold for €1,070 (€2.08kg).
Cows
There was a good entry of cull cows on offer, and plenty of buyers. Like previous weeks, buyers were paying the best prices for young cows carrying flesh, with plainer cows not being met with the same level of demand as fleshed types.
Continental feeding cows sold mainly from €350 to €450 along with the weight.
Better-quality types suitable for slaughter made from €500 to €600 over the weight mainly, with top-quality young fleshed cow heifers making up to €2.10/kg.
