Munster Cattle Breeding Group and Progressive Genetics will once again be attending the National Ploughing Championships. The group is responsible for more than 75% of all cattle inseminations and 98% of all milk recording services in Ireland, and the Ploughing offers an ideal opportunity for customers to get the latest information and advice from the experts in genetics, herd health and milk recording. Also present will be National Cattle Breeding Centre (NCBC), which operates Ireland’s largest beef and dairy breeding programmes, on behalf of Munster and Progressive.

Milk recording is all about making your herd more profitable. Are you fielding your best team and maximising production from the mature cows in the herd? It’s all in the reports. This is an ideal opportunity to quiz the experts on managing your SCC and make sure you’re getting the full value from your reports. Another value-added bonus for milk recording customers is the success of pregnancy testing from milk samples. This is a great new option for dairy farmers and offers an easy, stress-free way to pregnancy test cows.

Staff from the herd health divisions of Munster and Progressive will be present to discuss the disease and parasite testing options they offer. Herd owners have sorted a number of problems on farm this year that were causing issues with poor production by joining the herd health schemes. In late lactation and close to the 2017 calving season is an ideal time to do a Johne’s disease herd screen in milk recording herds.

On the stand there will be a live display of progeny from some of Ireland’s top terminal and replacement sires available. The progeny include a Belgian Blue weanling by Serpentin - ZSD, a Charolais weanling by Heracles - HHJ and two replacement heifers by top replacement sires Auroch Deuter - AHC and Castleview Gazelle - ZAG.

A video wall on the stand will show you around the studs at Enfield and Mallow where Ireland’s top dairy and beef sires are housed in state of the art buildings. These purpose-built facilities are designed to have the welfare of the bulls to the fore. Also, there will be a video showing the semen processing inside Ireland’s most modern and well-equipped semen laboratory. NCBC’s semen lab is equipped to ensure that all the semen is of the highest standard and capable of achieving the maximum conception rates in the field.

For international visitors, Ireland Genetics, the export division of NCBC, will be represented by Amanda Bogan, international sales officer. International sales is an important and growing part of NCBC’s business, with increased interest worldwide on NCBC’s breeding programmes, Dairy, Beef on Dairy, Replacement, Terminal and Polled.

The new 2016/7 beef catalogue will be launched featuring:

  • Six of the top 10 commercially available Limousin sires on replacement index. Castleview Gazelle ZAG is the joint top Limousin sire available. The top two Limousin sires commercially available on terminal Index – Ice Cream and Idalgo PP.
  • Five of the top five commercially available Charolais sires on Replacement Index. Cavelands Fenian LZF is the number one. Six of the top ten on terminal index, Fiston FSZ is the number one.
  • Two of the top five commercially available Simmentals on replacement index.
  • The number one commercially available Shorthorn.
  • The number one Saler on replacement index.

From a dairy perspective, due to a base change for genetic evaluations, dairy sires figures will look a lot different than before. This again gives you a great opportunity to ask the experts on the stand.
