Many managers report the calf trade holding steady and, if anything, firming a little in recent days. This comes on the back of numbers continuing to tighten, while export and farmer demand has held well. Better-quality calves continue to sell best, with light crossbred, Jersey and Friesian calves and poorer-quality Angus and Hereford calves remaining a slow trade.
Light and young Friesian calves continue to sell on average from €60 to €80, with small numbers selling back to €30 to €50. Strong farmer-type calves are making from €120 to €140/head, with the best-quality aged calves selling to €170 to €200.
Exceeding €200/head
