The amount of potential agri students has now fallen for a consecutive two years in a row. The 2014 high of 2,858 fell to 2,651 in 2015 and fell again to 1,990 this year.
Of those applying, the number placing it as their first preference is relatively low at just 455.
It appears the economic climate impacts on preferences, with 2009 proving to be a particularly popular year for agriculture, with 2,712 applications.
Popular choices
Subjects the most sought after by prospective students include the usual arts, social science and applied science. However, courses in architecture and engineering saw significant rises, with architecture increasing by almost 14%.
Students hoping to study dentistry were low at 1,085. While the number of applicants to study veterinary was also down 834, perhaps not an indication of lack of interest however.
A total of 76,081 applications were received by CAO by the 1 February closing date, an increase of 1,657 applicants on the previous year.
