An accident involving slurry mixing on a farm near Letterbreen, Co Fermanagh, resulted in a number of cattle being killed and a farmer being hospitalised.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has said that they were called to the farm on the Station Road at around 8pm on Tuesday (11 October).

A PSNI spokesperson said that a 30-year-old man was taken to hospital and treated for breathing difficulties. The man was then released from hospital a short time later.

Reports indicate that five cattle were killed in the incident and a number of other cattle were evacuated from the shed.

The Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland has said that the incident is being investigated.

The closed period for slurry spreading in NI begins on Saturday (15 October) at midnight. Although ground conditions have improved on many farms over the past week, continued wet weather before this has delayed cuts of silage and subsequent slurry spreading for farmers.
