The numbers on offer were slightly back on last week as a result of Monday’s special bank holiday weanling sale, but that did not take from the trade.

The cull cow ring saw another strong trade for all fleshed cows. All good-quality fleshed cows made from €1.85/kg to €1.95/kg, with top-quality U grade cows making from €2/kg to €2.10/kg. Like previous weeks, demand was firm for feeding cows, with prices of continental types running mainly from €1.60/kg to €1.75/kg.

Very backward types and light cows made from €1.30/kg upwards.

Cows

There was a good entry of calved cows and heifers on offer, which were met with strong demand. Older plain cows with young calves at foot sold from €1,100 to €1,400, while better-quality types sold for €1,600 upwards.

At the top of the market, top-quality calved heifers with calves at foot made from €2,000 to over €2,300 for better-quality types.

Demand was strongest for large-framed well-grown heifers with stars.

Bullocks

In the bullock ring, demand remained very strong for all forward and heavy types. Those over 600kg sold mainly from €750 to €800 over the weight. Buyers continue to be active for all short-keep types ticking the boxes of movements, weight and age.

Bullocks from 500kg to 600kg were again more common than heavy types. Prices for these ranged mainly from €600 to €700 over the weight for average-quality continental types, with better-quality U grade bullocks making well over €800 along with the weight.

Farmer buyers continue to be actively sourcing for grass, with steers from 400kg to 500kg selling mainly from €550 for plainer types to €700 along with the weight for better-quality types.

The majority of 400kg to 420kg bullocks easily sold at over €1,000/head.

Strong demand for lighter types under 350kg saw several good-quality continental bulls in that weight range make over €1,000 also.

Heifers

The heifer ring saw another good trade.

Forward heifers over 500kg sold mainly from €600 to €700 along with the weight, with top-quality heifers and those with breeding potential making in excess of €800 over the weight.

Store heifers from 400kg to 500kg remained steady.

Prices of these ranged mainly from €950 for lesser-quality types to €1,200 for good-quality continentals, with fancy heifers making over €1,250. Heifer weanlings from 300kg to 400kg were a solid trade but the numbers on offer were lower than last week.

There were plenty of farmer buyers for these and prices ranged mainly from €750 to €950 depending on weight.

Great trade at Headford

Saturday’s sale at Headford Mart saw very strong prices paid once again for all good-quality types. Bullocks sold from €255 to €1,050 over the weight with a heavy Charolais weighing 710kg making €1,760.

Heifers sold from €280 to €795 over the weight, with a 495kg Charolais heifer selling for €1,290 (€2.60/kg).

Weanling heifers sold from €280 to €630 over while bulls sold from €325 to €860 over.

Cull cows sold from €680 to €1,500, with cows with calves at foot making from €1,020 to €1,440.
