Numbers were similar to the corresponding sale last year. There was a little bit of everything available in the bullock sale, with young continental bullocks especially sought after.

Spring 2016-born Hereford and Angus bullocks made up to €460 with their weight and continental bullocks in the same age group made up to €770 over the euro/kilo. Forward stores were in short supply and they sold from €1.72/kg to €2.17/kg.

There was a smaller selection of young bulls on offer following at a show and sale last week. Those under 330kg were more in demand, with young bulls 20kg either side of 300kg making from €2.50/kg to €2.90/kg. Bulls above 350kg sold for between €2.20/kg and €2.35/kg.

  • Cows

    The forward cow trade remains unchanged, with the benchmark of the well-fleshed Friesian cow still commanding €300 over the €/kg. Fleshed beef breed cows sold from €1.60/kg to €1.95/kg. There are a few more feeder cows beginning to appear and they are closer to €200 with their weight. Overall, cow prices ranged from €80 to €900 with their weight.

  • One Limousin, 725kg – €1,430, €1.82/kg.
  • One Charolais, 950kg – €1,850, €1.95/kg.

  • One Jersey, 535kg – €660, €1.23/kg.
  • In the suckler sale, a group of three-year-old black whitehead heifers in-calf to a Charolais bull sold for an averaged €990. Of the calved cows on offer, a Limousin cow with a heifer calf at foot made €1,390, while a Hereford cow with Hereford heifer calf made €1,250.
