This Saturday’s sale at Dowra Mart saw another good trade for all types of cattle. Being July, the cattle sale was small but the sheep numbers are starting to rise again.

The majority of cattle for sale were good-quality store types. Bullocks over 500kg were only available in small numbers and prices ranged mainly from €2.10/kg to €2.20/kg for average-quality types. Better quality R+ and U-grade continental bullocks sold from €2.20/kg to €2.40/kg.

This pair of Charolais cross bullocks, born October 2016 and weighing 370kg on average sold for €810 each (€2.19/kg).

There were some plainer types and Friesian stores on offer also. The trade for these was quite firm also and prices ranged mainly from €1.70/kg to €1.90/kg.

Stores from 400kg to 500kg were in abundance and were a solid trade once again, with plenty of farmers active. Prices ranged mainly form €2.00/kg to €2.20/kg for average-quality types, while R+ and U grades sold up to €2.50/kg.

The main trade for good-quality cattle was from €2.35/kg to €2.45/kg. Plain light stores made from €1.60/kg to €1.80/kg, with the lower range of prices paid for Friesians.

Heifers

There was a good entry of heifers on offer and the quality of these was quite good. Heavy heifers over 500kg were only available in small numbers, but where they were available they were snapped up quite quickly. Prices ranged mainly from €600 to €750 along with the weight, with most of those making over €1,200.

This Charolais cross heifer born November 2015 and weighing 405kg sold for €1,075 (€2.65/kg).

Those from 400kg to 500kg were quite abundant and the trade for these was solid also. Prices ranged mainly from €2.30/kg to €2.50/kg for average-quality continentals, with top-quality heifers making from €2.60/kg to €2.70/kg.

Lighter weanling heifers were firm also and sold mainly from €2.40/kg to €2.60/kg for average-quality 300kg to 400kg types, while lighter heifers made from €2.60/kg to €2.80/kg, with top-quality types making well over €3.00/kg.

Bulls

Weanling bulls sold from €2.50/kg to €2.60/kg for those from 300kg to 400kg. Better-quality types made from €2.70/kg to €2.90/kg.

Light bulls were not that plentiful and sold mainly from €2.60/kg to €2.80/kg and up to €3.00/kg for top-quality types.
