A smaller-than-usual entry saw bulls starting at €2,000 and averaging €2,717 at the Charolais society show and sale in Athenry recently.

The reserve champion, Grangwood Petite Dor, exhibited by Jerry O’Keeffe, Woodlawn, Grange, Knocklong, Co Limerick, took the top price of the sale at €4,200. By Goldstar Echo, he is out of a homebred dam by Enfield Picasso and has a five-star rating for both terminal and replacement indices. Oliver Ryan, Upperchurch Village, Thurles, Co Tipperary, was the buyer.

The champion, Cloughbrack Joey (by Nippur), exhibited by local breeder, Mattie Kelly, Cloughbrack, Newbridge, Ballinasloe, Co Galway, was unsold, but Mattie did later sell Cloughbrack Jerry, second to the reserve champion, for €3,600. A five-star bull, he is a son of Pirate and is out of a homebred dam by Doonally New. The buyer was Thomas Hynes, Lissylisheen, Kilfenora, Co Clare.

Mattie also took home €2,700 for the Oscar son Cloughbrack Jakey, bought by Kevin Connors, Ballinasloe. Meanwhile, third prize-winner Windmill Larry sold for €2,750. Bred by Michael Nerney, Elphin, Co Roscommon, he is by Fleetwood and out of a homebred Pirate dam. With five stars for terminal index and four stars for replacement index, he was purchased by local man Michael McEvilly, Pribbaun, Roscahill, Co Galway.
