The Comprehensive Trade and Economic Agreement (CETA) between the EU and Canada due to enter into force provisionally on 21 September remains suspended to negotiations on the 17.700t annual quota of duty-free European cheese to be allowed into Canada.

The European Dairy Association (EDA) of milk processors has publicly opposed plans to let Canadian cheese manufacturers manage 60% of the quota – effectively choosing their EU competitors.

“We do not find it acceptable that the quota would be used as compensation to the Canadian dairy sector for the market opening agreed under the CETA,” said EDA’s secretary general Alexander Anton.
