Strong domestic trade and huge demand from China has lead to positive movements in the pig sector.

Prices stabilised last Friday to €1.64/kg, with some factories offering up to €1.66/kg.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, executive secretary of the IFA Pigs Committee Amii McKeever said, "There is really good demand and processors are actively looking for Irish pig meat.

"China has soaked up a massive amount and the Chinese market alone consumes half of the world's pig meat."

Still below EU average

The latest figures from Bord Bia show that over 71% of pig meat is carrying the quality assured logo.

"The demand from the Irish retailer is strong and there is a lot of pig meat being exported so it's a good place."

With such demand, there is also no pig meat in store, McKeever added.

However, despite some prices reaching €1.66/kg, this is still below the European average.

Without the 5.2% in VAT, the price set last Friday comes to €1.58/kg. However, the EU average is €1.63/kg.

"Considering everything in the market, we should be back up there and there is a real justification for further price rises," Amii said.
