As the rain hammered down on the Cavan/Longford border yesterday, Clonguish Elegant (above), bred and exhibited by Joe McGarry from Newtown Forbes, Co Longford, was awarded the overall Simmental and interbreed champion of the show.

A regular winner on the show circuit last year, Elegant is a December 2013 born daughter of Milton Lord Tiffany. In reserve was the overall champion from the Limousin section, a young heifer bred and exhibited by Stanley Richardson from Newtowngore, Co Leitrim.

In the Charolais section Padraig Higgins from Mohill, Co Leitrim was awarded the champion for his June 2014 born bull by the well-known AI sire Pirate.

In reserve was Tom Mulligan from Dromod, Co Leitrim, with his April 2015 born bull calf sired by Liscally Eti.

Basil Arnold from Killeshandra, Co Cavan, continued his winning form from Mullingar show as he went home with the champion Hereford for his March 2014 born son of Goulding Poll 1 Superduty. The Angus champion went to Tom Reynolds from Johnston Bridge, Carrick-on-Shannon for his October 2014 born daughter of Nightingale Dunbar.

Champion Shorthorn was awarded to the Craig’s from Coolarty, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, for their two year old heifer sired by Dovea Sir James.

In the commercial section, Sean Hughes from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, was pleased to see his 2015 born Belgian Blue/Charolais cross heifer calf come out on top to take the overall commercial champion of the show.

The young stockmanship class attracted more attention than most as a strong line up young boys and girls competed in less than desirable conditions. And all credit must go to young Emma Heinz who was awarded first place after she handled a little less than cooperative calf extremely well.
