Following an IFA regional meeting in Carlow this week, IFA Regional Chairman James Murphy said livestock farmers are concerned regarding unconfirmed reports over the Dawn Meats/Kildare Chilling merger.

He said any developments that may impact on competition in the beef and sheep sector must be fully examined by the Competition Authority.

James Murphy said one of the key issues from the beef crisis this year is the lack of real price transparency and this must be fully addressed.

He said, “Kildare Chilling has worked hard over many years in developing both the cattle and sheep business into the largest single plant in the country and plays a vital role in terms of price competition in both sectors. It is essential for farmers that this is maintained”.

In addition, James Murphy said Kildare Chilling has a very proud and efficient record of payment on the day of sale for all stock and this must be continued.
