Ireland could have avoided any link with the European-wide issue of contaminated eggs if all business bought Bord Bia approved Irish eggs, IFA poultry chair Nigel Rengahan has said.
Shelled, boiled eggs contaminated by an insecticide Fipronil were used by catering companies, while a small quantity of liquid pasteurised eggs were supplied to a number of food businesses for use in bakery products.
None of these eggs were in supermarkets or in shops.

“Ireland is self-sufficient in egg production. It is obvious that a few suppliers that were supplied with non-Irish products have caused this,” he said. “My hope is in the future that these businesses will stick to buying Bord Bia approved eggs.
