Last month we had the incredible story of Rambling Rose and her calf, but this month's cow endurance story is likely to top that.

Speaking on Radio Kerry this morning, David Baker and Jeff O'Mahony told the incredible story of a cow that swam almost three miles across Kenmare Bay in stormy weather conditions - and survived.

David told presenter Jerry O'Sullivan how he discovered the cow along the cliff while out walking with his wife in Dromore Woods on the Bank Holiday Sunday morning. The cow was very calm and looked to be in excellent condition.

David contacted the nearest farmer, Jeff, to see if he was missing a cow. When he confirmed the cow wasn't his, the pair began to ring around local farmers to find the Charolais cow's owner.

The next morning, they checked the cow's tag and George Neill from the local mart was able to check her herd number. What he discovered was the cow belonged to farmer Timmy O'Sullivan, from Lohart in Tuosist - directly across the bay from where the cow was discovered.

Timmy's missing cow had swam three miles across Kenmare Bay in the middle of the night to Dromore Templenoe in stormy weather. The cow had been weaned days earlier and it's believed she had heard her calf and went down to the bay looking for her where she got swept in.

David said: "Anyone in their right mind wouldn't think a cow would make it across the bay".

The cow has been named "Sirenia" by locals, after the group name of the mammals known as sea cows. Sirenia has now been reunited with Timmy with Jeff describing her as "a one true warrior".
