With world consumption of dairy and meat products set to rise, and with most of this increase coming from China, Minister Creed set out a target to increase the value of Irish agri-food exports to €19bn by 2025.

In his address to Chinese and Irish companies, the minister explained that there already has been a two-and-a-half fold increase in agri-food exports to China from around €240m in 2012 to €610m in 2015. “This reflects the ongoing strengthening of the relationship between China and Ireland and I’m particularly pleased to see seafood and pigmeat double in value terms between 2012 and 2015,” he said.

Rising dairy exports

Dairy exports have risen by 380% from 2012 to 2015 as more and more whole skim and infant formula powders are supplied into China out of Ireland. Exports in this sector have grown from €103m in 2012 to €390m in 2015. That means over 50,000t of dairy produce left Ireland for China in 2015. Minister Creed said: “Right now, three of the four world’s largest infant formula companies have decided to locate in Ireland and have been in Ireland for up to 40 years.”

Jack Kennedy interviews Matthew Quinton, chief financial officer of Wyeth nutrition, and Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed in China in our podcast below:

Bord Bia CEO Aidan Cotter updated delegates on the progress and roll-out of Origin Green and how Irish meat and dairy production is primarily produced from grazed grass.

When Saoirse Ronan came on screen for the Bord Bia promotional clip explaining how Irish produce moves from farm to fork, you could clearly see how the Chinese delegation was taken in by the charm offensive. The photos flashed and cameras rolled and the audience was drawn into the green fields, running water and blue skies.

Infant formula

Also at the conference, representatives from two of the world’s largest infant formula producers explained why they are sourcing product in Ireland. Both outlined that the green grass image is helpful in marketing a very sensitive product. They highlighted the production system from grazed grass as one of the main reasons they locate in Ireland. They both mentioned the strong association between commercial industry and research and development sectors in Ireland as another determining factor for locating in Ireland.
