Kerry breeder Matthew Goulding, Ballyduff, had an extremely productive day, taking the top two prices and the reserve bull championship at the Irish Angus Society premier show and sale in Kilmallock recently.

The top price of €3,650 went to the reserve male champion Goulding JCB, by Goulding Extra, while the next highest price of €3,400 also went to the Ballyduff breeder, this time for Goulding Jo Jo, by Aynho Rossiter. Both bulls were purchased by TDM Farms, Limerick.

Fifty bulls went through the ring, with three-quarters (75% clearance) selling on average for €2,300 (similar to last year). Given its location, the sale attracted a notable number of dairy farmers who helped contribute to a particularly strong trade for young bulls. Many of these quality young bulls made from €2,700 to €2,800/head.

In the ring, judge William Stroker tapped forward Portanes Kian as the supreme male champion. Born January 2013, he is a Liss Man son and was exhibited by John Lynch, Portauns, Kilmallock. Although withdrawn in the ring, it’s believed the champion sold a few days later to William Wren, Bruff, Co Limerick, for his suckler herd.

Meanwhile, Shane Murphy, Banteer, Co Cork, won both the female champion and reserve champion titles with two daughters of Friarstown Idol.

The championship went to the December 2012-born heifer Mercury Janet, selling for €2,250, while Mercury Jewel took the reserve title. She was unsold.
