Donoughmore Macra was celebrating on Saturday night after it triumphed over Termonfeckin Macra, Louth, in the all-Ireland impromptu debating finals in the Westlodge Hotel, Bantry, following the Macra na Feirme national AGM last Saturday night.

The team of Tom Carroll, Sean Wallace and Alan Twomey was successful over the motion ‘‘Ireland needs a leader like Donald Trump’’. Representing runners-up Termonfeckin Macra on the night were Mary Moran, Helena Reynolds and Eamon Briscoe. Eamon Cassells was the presiding officer.

Speaking at the event, Macra na Feirme president James Healy thanked both teams for an enthralling debate that kept everyone in the crowd engaged.

Challenge

He said: ‘‘This final is what impromptu debating is all about. It’s a major challenge constructing a solid argument in such a short space of time and it is a great skill to develop which is what the impromptu competition is all about and I would sincerely like to thank both teams for their fantastic efforts.’’

The impromptu debating title now passes from Ramor Macra, Cavan, to Donoughmore in Muskerry.
