The Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society witnessed a slight improvement in trade at this month’s multibreed sale in Carrick.

Bulls are finally starting to move in western parts, with the sale seeing 75% of the bulls forward finding new homes. The Charolais breed made up the majority of this, with 29 selling to average €2,600.

Leading the way with a top call of €6,300 was Crite Niger. This January 2017-born bull was brought out by nearby Elphin breeder Patrick Bruen. Sired by Doonally new son Ashleigh Admiral, Niger’s pedigree also includes Pirate and Domino. With five stars down the line, Niger met his reserve and left the ring sold at €6,300.

It was a long way back for the second-highest price at €3,600. Millstreet New was the bull to receive the bid and his pedigree included Pirate, Doonally New and Meath Earthwatch. This five-star terminal bull was brought out by Martin Golden, Carrigans Lower, Ballymote.

At €3,500, Michael Daly sold Tullaghan Maddison. This 18-month-old bull is sired by Goldstar Echo, while Grimaldi and Padirac also feature in his lineage.

Goldstar Echo was also the sire behind Brian McWeeney’s bull Rocklands Nigel, which sold for €3,100.

The €3,000 price tag was met twice on the day, with Vincent McBrien first at the money. His bull Camber Maddox was sired by Pirate and boasted four and five stars respectively on the terminal and replacement indices.

Matching him at the money was Limkiln Ned from Richard Hackett, Co Clare. This 15-month-old son of Lisnagre Elite is out of Horace-bred Limekiln Dolly.

This weekend, the Midland and Western Improvement Society will feature the Angus, Hereford and Shorthorn breeds.
