A farmer in his 80s has died following an accident involving a quad, the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has confirmed.

The accident happened on a farm near Rhode, Co Offaly, on Wednesday night.

Five people have died in farm accidents in the Republic of Ireland so far in 2017, while a 75-year-old man died in an accident involving a bull on a farm near Omagh on Tuesday 28 March. The incident was the first fatal farm accident to occur in Northern Ireland in 2017.

The HSA reports that 54 people were killed in farm accidents involving tractors and farm vehicles between 2007 and 2016.
