Following last week’s fallout between Larry Goodman’s ABP and the IFA over the collection of the EIF levy, an analysis by the Irish Farmers Journal can exclusively reveal that Irish farmers pay €50m a year through statutory and voluntary levies.

The EIF levy used to fund the IFA and other farmer associations came to €5.3m in 2014 and accounts for almost 11% of total levies deducted from farmers on a yearly basis. However, mandatory levies on farmers such as veterinary inspection levies, bovine disease eradication levies, the Bord Bia marketing levy and Ornua’s milk levy mean the total cost of all levies is around €50m. Dairy farmers pay almost €25m in levies, while beef levies amount to over €21m.
