Fine Gael deputies John Deasy and Michael Creed secured the date for the debate to coincide with the abolition of the quota regime.

The debate is taking place on foot of a Teagasc report forecasting a serious decline in dairy incomes this year.

The Dáil will discuss cashflow on dairy farms and managing market volatility amid expansion. Minister for Agriculture Simon Coveney will be present at the debate.

Superlevy vote

The EU Commission will vote on plans to allow farmers to pay their superlevy penalty over three years this month.

The vote is scheduled for 11 March, with draft regulation expected to be adopted and published by the end of next month before the abolition of the quota regime.

The iniative will allow member states to collect the fines in equal interest-free instalments in 2015, 2016 and 2017 to alleviate the financial burden on dairy farmers. Payment will be in three equal sums and interest-free.
