Livestock theft cover has been heavily advertised on FBD Insurance’s stands at shows across the country and Fergal Brady, sales executive for the Cavan and Monaghan area, told the Irish Farmers Journal there is strong demand for the product.

With a number of high-profile cases of cattle and lambs being stolen in the border area this year, farmers have been looking for ways of protecting themselves against the potential losses.

“If a beef farmer has 20 or 30 weanlings sitting in a field and they are worth €700 to €1,000 apiece, very quickly you are into large sums insured and large losses if it occurs,” said Brady. He added that dairy farmers were less of a target, because thieves make their money by selling the stolen animals for meat. There is no set price for the policies, and will depend on the value of animals insured and existing cover. An excess of €500 applies to each claim.
