Tuesday’s weanling sale at Raphoe Mart saw a small entry of weanlings. Mart manager Ann Harkin said that the quality of bulls is slightly higher than last year, with farmers choosing to sell better-quality calves earlier to make use of the strong trade. Feeders were active for all good-quality animals, while age and weight at sale affected prices.

Good-quality bulls from 400kg to 450kg sold from €2.40/kg to €2.50/kg, with top-quality types making over €2.60/kg for U grades. Farmers were very active for quality weanlings from 300kg to 400kg. These sold mainly from €2.35/kg to €2.50/kg for average-quality types, with the top third making from €2.80/kg to €3.00/kg. Demand for lighter types was very strong. Prices of €2.60/kg to €2.90/kg were common for average-quality types, with top-quality lots going over €3.20/kg.

The heifer trade was quite good, but maybe not as brisk as that seen for bulls. The average 350kg heifer made from €2.30/kg to €2.50/kg, with top-quality lots making over €2.70/kg. Lighter heifers were in demand also where quality was good. Prices ranged mainly from €2.70/kg to €2.90/kg for good-quality types.

The annual show and sale of weanlings will take place in two weeks time.

Commission rates are €8 to the seller and €9.50 to the buyer.
