Four farmers were named the biggest offenders from the sector on the tax defaulters list for the second quarter of 2017 for the underdeclaration of taxes.

Farmer, landlord and employee, Brian Brogan of Sockar, Trentagh, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, was imposed with a fine of €103,996.24, including tax, interest and penalties, for the underdeclaration of income tax.

Another farmer and fertiliser salesman, Seamus Lappin of 191 Granemore Road, Tassagh, Co Armagh, was fined including tax, interest and penalties, €48,391 for the underdeclaration of PAYE/PRSI/USC.

Two more farmers were fined €34,703 in total and €46,633.44, respectively, for the underdeclaration of capital gains tax and underdeclaration of income tax and VAT.

Failure to lodge income tax returns

Meanwhile, nine farmers were imposed with a range of fines for the underdeclaration of income tax returns.

The highest fine was for €10,500. In total, these nine farmers were fined €34,500.

Green diesel

Two farmers featured on the Revenue’s tax defaulters list for the misuse of marked mineral oil.

One farmer was from the Aran Islands, Co Galway, and the other was from Co Donegal. Both farmers were fined €2,500, respectively.
