It is estimated by Spanish producer organisation COAG that 45,000ha of farmland was destroyed by the flash flooding. A total of 60% of this land is cereals and fodder crops and 15% is spring drilled arable.
Thousands of livestock have perished due to the floods, despite farmers rallying to save around 20,000 head this week. Overall, the damage caused is thought to be worth €50m.
The flooding occured when the river Ebro burst its banks after a spell of heavy rain and snow melting in the Pyrenees. The government will wait until Friday to define compensation for farmers affected.
At least 10 people have died and thousands have evacuated their homes.
