As part of the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP), applicants must complete a beef carbon navigator with an adviser approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM).

The timeframe for completion is only four months away, with the deadline set as 31 October 2016.

It is important to note that completion of the carbon navigator differs from BDGP training, where applicants are contacted and offered a place on an organised course.

For the navigator, applicants must contact an adviser of their choice from the Department list and make an appointment to complete the navigator.

With over 22,000 applicants in the programme, applicants are advised not to leave the navigator until the last minute to complete.

The list of advisers is available at www.agriculture.gov.ie/beefschemes, where a guide to completing the carbon navigator is also available.

The guide states that an adviser will assist the farmer to complete the navigator in 2016 and also provide farmers with an overview of the benefits associated with reaching the individual targets set out in the navigator.

Required data

The data required in 2016 covers how each farm can reduce its greenhouse gas emissions over the period of BDGP by making improvements in key areas. These are listed as follows in the DAFM guide:

  • Longer grazing season.
  • Younger age at first calving.
  • Higher calving rate.
  • Improved growth rates.
  • Nitrogen efficiency.
  • Slurry management.
  • The cost of completing the carbon navigator in year one is covered by the Department, which explains in the document that a farmer’s cost is incorporated into the annual BDGP payment.

The outcome of the carbon navigator is a report that compares your farm performance with farms of a similar make-up and also highlights the potential that achieving targets set can have on farm income and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

    Subsequent navigators

For the following years of the programme, applicants are expected to update and complete the navigator annually, either online or through submission of key data via survey forms issued by the ICBF.

It is envisaged the updated information required will cover areas such as the length of the grazing season, fertiliser use and slurry spreading.

    Useful contact details

The document lists useful contact details for organisations linked to the carbon navigator.

The DAFM contact is listed as 076-106 4423 or beefschemes@agriculture.gov.ie, the Teagasc contact listed is 059-917 0200, while the ICBF helpline is 1850 625626 and cowwelfare@sws.ie.
