The relatively strong calf trade has continued at marts right across the country. While the majority of marts have passed peak numbers, the volume of calves on offer has only fallen slightly in the past week or so.

In terms of the trade, Friesian bull calves are steady to slightly improved, with some mart managers saying that prices are up by €5/head. The average Friesian bull is currently selling for just under €100/head. The trend has continued that older and better-fed calves are receiving a premium of about €10 to €20/head over young and light calves. Where light Kiwi Friesians and light-boned crossbred Friesians are on offer, prices of €50 to €60/head are common.

Low numbers of Jersey calves continue to be recorded through marts, with most farmers opting to sell straight off farm. The average Jersey bull is currently making up to €25/head, with lighter types selling from €10 upwards.

The number of Angus calves on offer is relatively unchanged. Angus heifers are selling mainly from €150 to €170/head. Angus bulls saw prices stay relatively steady, selling mainly from €170 to €210/head. Stronger four-week-old calves were selling up to €250/head.

Hereford calves have remained firm also and are selling from €180 to €220 for heifers and from €230 to €270 for stronger bull calves.

Continental calf numbers remain low, but prices and demand continues to be strong. Prices range mainly from €180 to €270 for light two-week-old types and from €250 to €350 for stronger four-week-old calves.
