Irish Horse Board (IHB) members have until 30 June to make a nomination of someone they wish to represent their region not only on the Breeding Sub-Board but also on the governing body of Horse Sport Ireland.

Three IHB regions have vacancies this time around and in the current climate it is of the utmost importance that members have their say. The Indecon Report is due, as is a report from UCD and another from the independent study conducted by a group put together by Barry O’Connor that is looking at the financing of Irish horse sport.

During the past year, and particularly at the Irish Horse Board AGM before Christmas, a good deal of discontent has been voiced by members who felt that the breeding sector had been robbed of its independent funding within the newly created Horse Sport Ireland.

All of this makes for headlines but it does not make much difference. Decisions are made by the Breeding Sub-Board and it is now up to members do decide who speaks for them on this board. There is no use complaining about decisions made if your voice is not heard where it matters most - in the nomination and election process for the Board.

The three regions one, three and five, where vacancies occur this time cover a huge segment of Ireland.

  • • Region one is composed of Counties Wicklow, Louth, Kildare, Laois, Offaly, Meath, Westmeath and Dublin.
  • • Region three takes in Waterford, Kerry, Limerick and Cork.
  • • Region five covers the border counties of Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, Cavan, Monaghan, Longford and Roscommon.
  • To request a nomination form call 045 854511. Alternatively, you can print a form which is available online at ihb.ie.

Should there be more than one nomination for a region then a postal ballot will be held between now and August. It is in the interest of all breeders that members get involved in this process. The new Knowledge Transfer Groups should aid in this effort.
