Dairygold has been granted planning, subject to appeal, for its €60m cheese production facility in Mogeely by Cork County Council.

The proposed development on behalf of Dairygold’s commercial partners TINE, Norway’s largest farmer-owned dairy co-operative, is expected to see around 10,000t of Jarlsberg cheese produced at Mogeely.

A Dairygold spokesman said the development was a “significant investment and employment commitment for the local area”.

Dairygold faced public opposition to the plant, with more than 100 submissions made to Cork County Council during the planning process. Their concerns centred on the discharge of waste water into Cork harbour.

The co-op could still end up facing An Bord Pleanála if an objection is lodged during the appeal period.

However, Dairygold has factored this possibility into its time frame for the development, which would see additional cheese production at Mogeely by late summer 2019.
