Burns was ratified at a meeting of the Laois county executive on Wednesday night.
He told the Irish Farmers Journal that he is “honoured” to be selected by his county executive to run for the position.
A suckler, beef and tillage farmer from Mountmellick, Co Laois, Burns previously served as sheep chair with the IFA.

As it stands, there are four declared candidates for the IFA presidential election - Tim O’Leary, Michael Silke, Flor McCarthy and Henry Burns.
Each candidate needs six county executives to back their campaign – their own plus five other county executives. Nominations for the position of president close on 6 January 2016 at 5.30pm.
