Farmers trading hoggets are regaining some negotiating power after last week’s lull in the trade.

Tight supplies are generating competition among buyers, with prices paid rising on average by 5c/kg and prices generally ranging from €5.10/kg to €5.15/kg, although producer groups and dealers are securing an additional 5c/kg to 10c/kg.

Demand for spring lambs is sluggish with factories quoting a base price of €6/kg. It is hoped that Easter will kick-start demand, with prices starting 50c/kg below last year’s level and €1/kg below a price of €7/kg.
