One of the greatest assets in our livestock sector is the fact that, through the ICBF, our breeding data remains in the ownership of farmers. It took foresight from industry stakeholders, in particular the then IFA general secretary Michael Berkery, to back a levy on tags to part-fund the establishment and development of ICBF. Since its inception, an independent review has shown ICBF to deliver €587m for Irish dairy farmers. With changes to the tag tendering process, this funding stream is now under threat. Why are industry leaders silent in calling for its reinstatement given what it has delivered and will continue to deliver for farmers?
