Baileys Ice Princess was crowned inter-breed champion, continuing her winning spree for the Connell brothers, Oldcastle, Co Meath, at Elphin Show. Managing to stay dry for the day, the good weather brought out a strong lineup of cattle in all breeds, including the all-Ireland Charolais calf classes.

Limousin

Judge in the Limousin section was Christopher Murray, Co Armagh, who selected Baileys Ice Princess as his overall Limousin champion, owned by the Connell brothers, Co Meath. Ice Princess, a daughter of Baileys Darwin, later went on to be tapped forward as the inter-breed champion of Elphin Show. Reserve Limousin champion went to the Phillips family from Gurteen, Co Sligo, with their September 2012-born cow Freinwater Gabrella, sired by Ironstone Diego, with her Ampertaine Foreman-sired heifer calf at foot.

Simmental

Judge David Dillon selected his champion Simmental, which went to Paddy and Elaine Hennelly, Rosses Point, Co Sligo, with their cow Seepa Aster and her March-born calf Seepa Gem at foot. Tapped forward as reserve champion was Michael Oliver’s junior heifer Elegant Start. Michael is from Swinford, Co Mayo.

Angus

The Angus section saw Millbawn Majestic selected as champion. Owned by Amanda Bogan and Conor Craig, Majestic, the February-born bull calf, is sired by Lawford Bagatelle. Reserve champion went to Bernard Kerins’s two-year-old AYR-sired Senior Heifer.

Commercial

Judge Martin Regan, Cloonfad, Co Roscommon, selected February-born heifer calf Chancy Lady as his overall commercial champion. Sired by Ampertaine Foreman, Lady is owned by Michael Martin, Moate, Co Westmeath. She then went on to be tapped forward as reserve inter-breed champion of the show. Reserve commercial champion went to the Ronan brothers, Bekan, Co Mayo, with their Milbrook Dartangan-sired March-born heifer calf.

Young handlers

Jack Vahy, Ballyhale, Co Mayo, came out on top in the boys’ U16 young handlers class, with his appropriately decorated Limousin heifer. Coming out in first position in the girls’ section was Emma Hynes.

Hereford

Judge Shane McKiernan, Cavan, selected Basil Arnold’s March 2014-born bull as champion Hereford, sired by Superduty. Basil is from Killeshandra, Co Cavan.

Charolais

Father and daughter duo John and Leanne Searson, Roscrea, Co Tipperary, were put through their paces judging the Charolais section, with high numbers and quality in all classes.

The all-Ireland baby bull calf champion went to the McGovern brothers’ January-born calf, sired by Pirate and out of a CF52 Dam. The all-Ireland baby heifer champion was the January-born Glenree Lexie, sired by Cottage Devin and owned by John O’Grady, Glenamaddy, Co Galway.

Having won the female championship, Cassina Izzy, owned by Martin Clyne, Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, went on to win overall Charolais champion of the show. Cassina Izzy, a two-year-old heifer, is sired by CF52.Tapped out as reserve champion was the previous male champion, Lisnagree Jasmine, a September-born bull sired by Pirate and owned by Jim Geoghegan, Streamstown, Mullingar.

Shorthorn

Champion Shorthorn went to the Flatley brothers, Glenamaddy, Co Galway, with their 2009-born cow Cappanellen Nancy, sired by Creaga Cosmo, and her January-born heifer calf at foot.
