Two agricultural bodies have joined forces in an attempt to curb the worrying trend of farm deaths.

The IFA has established the Save Lives, Think Safety, Farm Safely campaign and Acorn Independent Merchants, which represents 11 agri merchants around the country, has joined the campaign to raise awareness about the need for safety on farms.

As part of the campaign, Acorn Merchants will put a “save lives” logo on all its products and vehicles.

IFA president Eddie Downey has welcomed Acorn’s involvement and is urging other co-ops and merchants to get involved in the initiative.

“Having the Save Lives, Think Safety, Farm Safely logo on feed and fertilizer bags and delivery trucks we hope will act as a constant reminder to farmers to adhere to safe working practices and reduce risks. I hope that all co-ops and merchants will support the campaign around the country,” Downey said.

“IFA has written to over 60 co-ops and feed merchants this week inviting them to participate in the Save Lives, Think Safety, Farm Safely campaign in 2015. It is up to all of us to do whatever we can to change attitudes towards safety and make our farms a safer place to work and live,” Downey added.

This year has been a bad year for farm safety. Twenty nine people have lost their lives on Irish farms so far in 2014.
