The national executive council of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has voted to take out the reference to "regional chair" in rule 75(b) of the organisation's constitution. This rule requires that a candidate for the office of president, deputy president or regional chairman be a full-time farmer.

This particular rule, rule 75(b), caused major problems for the Connacht region when the only man to receive the backing of his own county executive and the backing of another county executive to become chair of the region, Roscommon's John O'Beirne, was disqualified from the race due to the fact that he was not a full-time farmer at the time of his nominations.

In order to have a contest, a candidate must receive the backing of their own county, as well as the support from one other county in the province. A county can only lend support to one candidate.

In the second round of nominations for the post of Connacht regional chair, all five counties in the region nominated a candidate, causing an impasse that still exists to this day.

The five counties in Connacht were given a deadline of Easter Sunday by the IFA’s executive council to reach an agreement to facilitate an election, but no such agreement was reached.

O'Beirne's Strokestown branch of the IFA in Co Roscommon did not facilitate voting in the election of a new president and deputy president to protest at the deadlock in the Connacht regional chair election.
