In the past few days the mart trade around the country has been strong, driven by grass buyers sourcing cattle for grass. Saturday's sale in Balla mar, Co Mayot saw another strong trade for all good quality cattle. Some plainer types continue to be a slower trade.

Forward store bullocks over 600kg were a continued strong trade. Forward store types sold from €700 to €850 over the weight. Store bullocks from 500kg to 600kg were a strong trade also with buyers and dealers active. Prices ranged mainly from €650 to €800 over. Bullocks from 400kg to 500kg were said to be a steady trade and made from €600 to €700 along with the weight.

Demand for heifers was up on the day, as were prices, but only of good quality types. Forward heifers over 500kg sold mainly from €650 to €800 over the weight, with the U grades making from €750 to €850 over the weight. Lighter stores from 400kg to 500kg sold mainly from €600 to €800 over. The cull cow trade was said to be fairly firm also, with steady demand for all types.

Large entry at Headford

Today’s sale at Headford Mart saw a good trade for all type of cattle. Bullocks made from €240 to €875 over the kg. Heifers made from €230 to €790 over the kg. Weanling Bulls made from €435 to €710 over the kg. Weanling Heifers made from €300 to €695. Suckler Cows made from €1,350 to €,600Cull Cows made from €520 to €1370. Lambs made from €107to €125. Hoggetts made up to €175. Cull Ewes made from €80 - €117. Ewes with lambs at foot made €195.
