A 96% clearance rate of the 835 animals on offer meant Castleisland Mart manager David White was very happy with the recent weanling show and sale.

White was impressed with the spec of animals and trade that was on offer at the mart.

"Given the downward market, the trade went very well especially when most weanlings over 400kg were making between €2.40/kg and €2.70/kg.

"Those prices would have been expected last month but it was a good turn out of buyers coming from Galway, Cork, Laois, Tipperary and Meath, so that tells us how good these Kerry weanlings perform for those buyers who come back again and again.”

Cattle looked exceptionally well today

The recent heavy rains in the area had no adverse effect on the stock with cattle in super condition.

David said: “Cattle looked exceptionally well today given the rain that has fallen and no signs of sickness in them. After the deluge of rain and tough weather great praise has to be given to the Kerry farmers, their efforts were received in the price today.”

Trade was solid all day with weanling bulls under 400kg with most making from €2.25/kg up to €2.90/kg with a handful above and below this price range. U and strong R grade potential stock were especially sought after.

Champion of the show

Champion of the show was a Belgian Blue heifer owned by Michael Sheehan from Glencar, Co Kerry.

The November 2016-born heifer weighed 438kg and made €1,500 (€3.43/kg).

The sale topper was a red Belgian Blue heifer born in September 2016. She weighed 478kg and made €2,160, €4.52/kg.

There was a good trade for calves but plainer stock were a tougher sell and farmers were very active for bucket-reared calves.

These bulls born in March 2017 and weighing 378kg, sold for €1,030, (€2.73/kg).

This bull born in July 2016 and weighing 478kg, sold for €1,150 (€2,41/kg).

This bull born in January 2017 and weighing 356kg, sold for €905 (€2.54/kg).
