Monday’s sale is expected to see a very large entry of weanlings on offer, which reduced the number of cattle on offer.

In terms of the supply of cattle on offer, the quality was back slightly on last week, which did affect the price, particularly of poorer quality cattle. However, where good-quality stores and forward stores were on offer, the trade remained firm.

Good-quality forward bullocks remain a firm trade.

In many cases, average bullocks, or those that would be slaughtered over 30 months saw prices only marginally behind in-spec stock.

The main trade for those over 600kg saw prices range mainly from €600 to €700 over, with top-quality types making over €800 along with the weight. Those from 500kg to 600kg continue to be a steady trade and sold from €600 to €700 over for average-quality types.

The average 450kg steer sold mainly from €550 to €700 along with the weight, with better-quality types making up to €800 over. However, plainer store cattle were a little slower to sell.

This Charolais bullock born March 2015 and weighing 560kg sold for €1,200 (€2.14/kg).

This Limousin cross bullock born March 2016 and weighing 580kg sold for €1,315 (€2.27/kg).

This five-star Shorthorn cross heifer born May 2015 and weighing 450kg sold for €1,170 (€2.60/kg).

Heifers

Forward heifers were only available in low numbers, and the quality of heifers was better last week. Good continental store heifers from 500kg to 600kg sold mainly from €600 to €700 over the weight, with top-quality U grade types making over €750 along with the weight. Lighter stores were steady where good-quality types were available. Prices ranged mainly from €900 to €1,200 per head. Light heifers were a little slower to sell where heifers were plainer in quality.

Those from 300kg to 350kg sold mainly from €700 to €950.

This Charolais cross heifer born May 2016 and weighing 350kg sold for €965 (€2.76/kg).

Cows

The cow ring saw another very strong trade for all well-fleshed cows.

The best-quality young cow/heifers sold from €2.05/kg to €2.10/kg, while heavy and fat cows sold from €1.80/kg to €2/kg.
