That said, there were still about 750 head in the yard, with plenty of demand for all types of cattle on offer.

The quality of cattle on offer was fairly good, with good demand for the plainer weanlings and cattle which passed through the rings also.

Prices were up about €70/head on the same sale last year. Bullocks over 600kg sold mainly from €600 to €700 over the weight and to over €800 along with the weight for top-quality bullocks, similar to recent weeks.

This 705kg Saler cross bullock born April 2016 sold for €1,550 (€2.20/kg).

Forward store bullocks from 500kg to 600kg were a good trade, with prices ranging mainly from €550 to €650 over the weight, and better-quality types making from €650 to €850.

Stores from 400kg to 500kg sold mainly from €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg for average-quality types.

Heifers

The heifer ring saw a strong and steady trade for all types. Weanling heifers from 300kg to 400kg sold for about €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg for average-quality types.

Those from 400kg to 500kg were a similar trade to last week, with prices of average-quality types ranging mainly from €2.25/kg to €2.35/kg. Better-quality types sold from €2.50/kg upwards.

Heifers from 500kg to 600kg sold mainly from €2.10/kg to €2.20/kg for average-quality types.

Top-quality Charolais and Limousin heifers in the same weight range sold from €2.30/kg to €2.50/kg.

This 510kg Charolais cross heifer born January 2016 sold for €1,230 (€2.41/kg).

Top-quality heifers over 600kg sold mainly from €700 to €850 over the weight, with average-quality types selling from €650 to €700 over.

Cows

There were more than 130 cows on offer, with prices topping out at €2,410 for a Belgian Blue cross cow with a two-week-old Limousin bull calf at foot.

Dry cows sold to €1,585 for a top-quality 785kg Belgian Blue. Prices of heavy dry cows averaged from €1.60/kg to €1.70/kg.
