A large amount of home sales meant that nearly half the animals entered for the Hereford society sale in Kilmallock were absent.

Of the 55 bulls entered, only 30 were present for the sale, with 21 finding new homes, representing a 70% clearance, back by 12% on the year. Averages also took a hit on the year by €230 to level at €2,742.

Topping trade at €3,550 was Eamon McKiernan with Knockmountagh Fionn. This five-star terminal bull was sired by one of Ireland’s easiest-calving Hereford bulls Cill Cormaic Kasper. Born September 2015, Fionn also sees Corlismore Pompeii and Churchhill Storm in the back breeding. Successful buyer of the second prize-winner was Joe Kett.

Both the champion and reserve champion went unsold having failed to meet their reserves.

Claiming the overall championship was Riverrock Gold Star from Tony Hartnett, Rockchapel, Co Cork.

Sired by Gageboro Morgan, this bull had already picked up a few red rosettes including champion at the national calf show 2016. Reserve overall went to Glaslough Ranger from Nigel Heatrick.

This one is sired by Ballyaville Ger, while the dam is homebred Glaslough Model by Rathregan Napoleon.
