1: CLAAS DISCO 1100 mower

The first part of any silage job is to knock the grass. There are few butterfly mowers that release the beautiful aroma of cut grass into the air quicker than the CLAAS Disco 1100.

With an unrivalled 10.7m working width, this mower delivers the high-level efficiency required for the intensive utilisation of grassland. Another eye-catching feature is its compactness for road transport. When folded it measures only 3m wide, making getting to any job simple.

2: Malone Tedd-Air 840

With the grass on the ground, the next step is to get it rowed up. Malone’s Tedd-Air range of rakes have a working width of 8.4m, with six rotors allowing for the minimum time to get the grass in order. The Tedd-Air has a robust design that is well suited to any terrain or working conditions.

It also features simple automatic headland management and an easily adjustable height function making sure none of next winter’s dinner gets left behind.

3: Fendt 1050 Vario

No silage fleet is complete without a flagship tractor to act as the operation’s poster boy.

The Fendt 1050 not only has the looks to play the part but also the power to back it up.

This 517hp beast was crowned Tractor of the Year 2016, in part because it is the world’s most powerful standard tractor. Not only does it have the power required, it is also renowned for its handling and boasts a driving experience similar to the most sophisticated cars.

4: Smyth’s four-axle Fieldmaster trailer

For any man in a rush to get the silage in the clamp before the rain hits, Symth’s four-axle trailer is your safest bet.

Coming in at just under 30ft in length and over 8ft wide the trailer has a payload capacity of 35m3 , which equates to lots of grass. The striking four high-speed axles are paired with low ground pressure tires to reduce soil compaction and increase weight bearing capacity.

5: Krone Big X 1100

Having a big trailer will be wasted if there is not a big harvester to fill it. Krone have manufactured the answer with the Big X 1100. The most powerful harvester available in Ireland this silage season, its MTU V12 engine is capable of producing 1,078hp.

Despite this massive power output, the double floor in the cab keeps noise to a minimum while ensuring maximum visibility. A tranquil location to operate from this summer.

6: Vicon FastBale

For a versatile fleet aiming to service both pit and bagged silage, the Vicon FastBale is a vital piece of equipment. Round baling has been described by Vicon themselves as an art form and it is one that has taken a massive leap forward with the unveiling of the FastBale.

Integrating a pre-chamber with a main chamber and a wrapper, it allows for non-stop baling which saves 15 to 18 seconds per bale. The baler does not compromise on quality while making sure you are home in time to see tomorow’s weather forecast.

7: Göweil combi baler-wrapper

All the greats enjoy some healthy completion and that’s what the Göweil combi baler-wrapper provides. Certainly no lightweight in the baler-wrapper market it weighs in at 8t empty, and has a width of almost 10ft.

Given its striking looks and with only a handful in the country, the Göweil is sure to be noticed. In addition to this it is designed to travel smoothly whether in the field or on the road.

The narrow spacing of the heavy-duty tandem axles ensure this machine is a gentle giant on soil.

8: McHale Orbital Wrapper

To the silage purists out there and believers in the sanctity of a separate baler and wrapper, few wrappers come close to the McHale Orbital wrapper.

This mainstay in silage fleets around the country delivers consistent and even overlap, along with optimum levels of fodder preservation and quality.

This wrapper might look simple and plain but great things come in small packages and it is more than capable of keeping up with multiple balers.

9 ProDig Push Off Fork range

Few things in life are as satisfying as a well packed silage clamp and one of the best ways to achieve that is with the ProDig Push Off Fork range. Ranging in size from 8-12ft it can fit a variety of machines. ProDig claim that you will never have to replace one of their 4.6ft Hardox tines due to a system featuring replaceable wear tips to increase durability.

Designed to maximise the volume it can push while incorporating operator comfort there will be plenty of time to sit back and admire your well packed clamp.

10 PistenBully 300 Green Tech

The final addition to the team is by far the least known but perhaps the one with the biggest potential to change the face of silage as we know it. Gone be with the days of a tractor or teleporter being used to transport bales.

Because of its amazing mobility and its precision the PistenBully operates much more efficiently than wheeled vehicles.

By repeatedly driving over an area on its tracks, a shudder effect is created which compacts the silage material even more, helping to prepare it perfectly for storage.
