Today will be a cloudy day with outbreaks of rain and drizzle throughout, but with good dry periods too. Fog will form on some Atlantic coasts and on high ground. Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees in moderate westerly winds.

It will be mainly dry on Thursday night with some patchy drizzle and rain. Staying mild with temperatures not lower than 9 or 10 degrees. Westerly winds will back southwest and increase fresh to strong overnight.

  • The IFA executive council received the resignation of the organisation’s president, Eddie Downey, during a crisis meeting on Wednesday night that ran till 4.30am on Thursday morning.
  • It was also revealed at the IFA’s emergency executive council meeting that former general secretary Pat Smith was given a severance package worth €2m. The package comprises a €1m upfront payment followed by a €100,000 payment every year for 10 years. The package was signed off by former president Eddie Downey.
  • Ireland’s final LPIS fine has been confirmed at €68.9m. The Department of Agriculture succeeded in whittling an intial €181m down to the current figure of €68.9m.
  • A strain of the deadly H5N1 avian flu virus has been detected on a poultry farm in the Dordogne region of France. H5N1 bird flu first infected humans in 1997 during a poultry outbreak in Hong Kong.
