The launch, led by our CAP specialist Peter Young, focused on the importance of farmers’ health. Last year was the first year the Irish Farmers Journal got involved, and the paper had the most successful campaign in the country, raising €38,000 for men’s health.

This year the Irish Farmers Journal has linked up with ICOS and Full Health Media in order to raise even more awareness of the campaign and facilitate six free health checks in marts across the country throughout November.

“We’re asking farmers to join us in growing moustaches and raising money for Movember,” Young said to Countrywide presenter Damien O’Reilly this morning.

“And if farmers can’t avail of the free health check in marts, we’re encouraging them to go to their doctor and get their health checked,” he said, “something farmers are usually quite reluctant to do.”

Movember, a campaign which aims to raise awarness of men’s health, focusing on prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity, began in Ireland in 2007 and has involved over 70,000 people and raised over €11m for the Irish Cancer Society.

Dairy farmer David Kerr, from Co Laois, has spoken candidly to the Irish Farmers Journal before about his experience with depression seven years ago. He was on Countrywide this morning and he told O’Reilly he was hit with a case of “reactive depression”, resulting in him seeking help and going into care.

One of the hardest things for Kerr was looking for help. “Farmers are used to being kings of their own castles and maybe that’s why we’re reluctant to seek help. Or we see it as a sign of weakness,” he told O’Reilly.

Kerr said in the early stages he “hadn’t a clue it was depression” but when he started suffering symptoms he went to his doctor who diagnosed him. Recovery took Kerr about six months.

“Nobody knew apart from a few close friends and I would never have spoken publicly about it until this year,” he added. “A veil of secrecy still surrounds mental health issues.”
